Our first year of providing environmental and outdoor education was the 1972-1973 school year. We had approximately 18,000 students from the Rochester schools visit. That year we also had a little over 2,000 people visit the nature center for community education programs and events. During this time, the Nature Center wasn't open for the general public to come and just visit the building and its displays. As the nature center building, staffing, and general public hours have grown, so has our menu of class offerings and special events. During the 2007-2008 school year, we provided programs for over 28,000 students from Rochester area schools and outlying communities, some as far away as Winona. We also had another 48,000 people visit the nature center for programs, special events, or maybe just to see what their favorite animal was up to that day.
